FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

Commonly asked questions regarding the operation and use of METAL-TEC

What is the METAL-TEC?
The original compact silent vibrating metal detector with advanced detection features which allows the user to pinpoint the physical location of an object and determine it's threat level based on the objects shape and size.

What is "Vibration Signature"?
Vibration Signature is a feature that helps the user determine the approximate physical shape of a possible hidden metal weapon being detected. After detecting metal on a subject take the METAL-TEC and turn it's narrow probe end toward the area in question, then move the METAL-TEC up and down (vertically) and side to side (horizontally) over the area. By observing where the vibration starts and stops while moving the METAL-TEC over the area, the user can determine the approximate shape and size of the hidden metal object.

What is "Density Discrimination"?
Density Discrimination helps the user determine the possible threat level of the metal object being detected. The METAL-TEC correlates the detection distance based upon the amount of metal mass contained in the object. Larger objects such as guns have a larger metal mass and will be detected at a greater distance than smaller objects such as a handcuff key, razor blade, Micro SD and SIM cards. This ability helps the user identify a possible threat based on the detection distance.

Does my METAL-TEC come with a warranty?
Yes, every unit comes from the factory with a 1 or 3 year limited warranty against manufacturer's defects. In order to receive your New Product Factory Warranty it is important that you fill in the form on the warranty registration page. (Click here)

Is my METAL-TEC water resistant?
Yes, the METAL-TEC is water resistant to 1atm (33 feet) “Also resistant to dust, dirt and foreign materials”

How do I turn on my METAL-TEC?
Press the On/Off button located on the center of the unit under the vinyl grip. Press the button once to turn the unit on, and again to turn the unit back off. "Do not hold the power button down".

Why does my METAL-TEC constantly vibrate in the holster?

The unit was designed so that the METAL-TEC would vibrate when turned on in the holster. Once the METAL-TEC is removed from the holster it will stop vibrating and is ready for use. This is a "self test" to show that the unit is working, and also prevents leaving the unit on after performing a search.

How do I know if my METAL-TEC has detected metal?

The METAL-TEC vibrates when it is in the detection range of a metal object.

Why does my METAL-TEC not vibrate at all when I turn it on?
METAL-TECs low battery indicator causes the unit to constantly vibrate as soon as the power is turned on with no metal present, however if the battery is completely dead it will not vibrate at all.  We recommend replacing the 9 volt battery at least once a year or after 2,000 searches with a brand new fresh 9 volt alkaline battery.

Do I ever need to calibrate my METAL-TEC?

No, the sensitivity on each unit is factory calibrated and automatically compensates for temperature changes.

Why does my METAL-TEC vibrate constantly even when no metal is present?
This maybe an indication that your battery is running low, METAL-TEC was designed to notify the user that the battery has been depleted to a level which no longer meets operating specifications. The low battery indicator will cause the unit to constantly vibrate as soon as the power is turned on outside of the holster, this notifies the user to replace the battery. This feature removes the possibility of the unit being used with a weak battery which may give incorrect detection results.

How do I replace the battery in my METAL-TEC?
Loosen the two screws counter clockwise while holding the battery door on. Gently remove the battery so as not to damage the unit. If the battery appears to be stuck, turn the unit upside down (With battery compartment facing down) and lightly tap on battery, or move battery from side to side until it comes loose. Never forcefully pull on the stuck battery as this may damage the battery terminals which will require factory servicing.

Insert a new fresh 9v Alkaline battery with the terminals facing down into the opening. The unit is non-polarity sensitive, which means the battery terminals can be orientated in either direction (+ or -) so long as the battery is inserted terminals first into the unit. Replace the battery cap and tighten the screws being careful not to overtighten, "do not use an electric screwdriver".

Can METAL-TEC help reduce physical contact when searching subjects for possible weapons ?
METAL-TEC is an invaluable tool to minimize physical contact during a pat down when searching for weapons, even on persons of the opposite sex, juveniles or persons who may have been exposed to viral infections. METAL-TEC is completely watertight and can be disinfected by using a mild soap cleanser, mild-bleach disinfectants or rubbing alcohol on the surface.
